Banyan Bar and Refuge is an Asian gastropub located in the heart of the South End. Its sister restaurant is The Gallows and Blackbird Donut so unique and enticing food is to be expected. The moment you walk in, you immediately feel like you are in a cool Asian-inspired shrine with a large Buddha greeting you behind the host stand, beautiful tree branches lining the ceiling and other various unique Asian sculptures throughout. If you are interested in trying something new and steer away from your traditional brunch food, then we definitely recommend trying this restaurant. The brunch menu is of medium size offering unique brunch items such as ramen, scallion pancake sandwich with smoked salmon and a Bahn Mi sandwich to name a few. Pictured here are the Blackbird Benedict and the Roasted Beet Vindaloo Sandwich. The Blackbird Benedict is out of this world and has a unique twist to the traditional eggs benny. It has a perfectly poached egg on top of a griddled Blackbird doughnut (say what!?) with char siu ham that is extremely flavorful. It is a bit on the heavy side but when it comes to doughnuts we simply can’t say no. We also highly recommend ordering the beignets to start – they are so bomb. They literally come piping hot straight from the kitchen topped with sugar and a sweet plum sauce. The prices are average with everything ranging around $14-$16 and the portion sizes are huge. We definitely left with our stomachs and wallets VERY happy.
