On the menu: Blueberry French Toast, French Toast Special, Strawberry Shortcake Stuffed French Toast, and Italian Stuffed French toast,—with names like this, it feels like the kind of food that comes along once in a blue moon—unfortunately, for Blue Moon Grill in Wakefield, Mass., we’re still waiting. Blue Moon Grill is a tiny, restaurant on Main Street in Wakefield, Mass. We had heard great reviews of this tiny diner, but then our troubles began. Choosing to brunch on the North Shore instead of in the city comes with our favorite perk—there’s always parking, but not so at this brunch spot. There’s a parking lot next door, but it’s not for the grill and you’ll be towed if you park there, so that leaves the four, free on-street parking spots. Plan on a wait, even when you call ahead. We were told 25 minutes and ended up waiting an hour, and the hostess clearly did not want to be bothered with requests of “how much longer?” because every time we approached her she ran in the other direction. Once you’re seated, (if you haven’t died of hunger yet) you’ll find a cramped, jam-packed restaurant with barely any room to move between tables. The staff arrives promptly at your table and you get the feeling they want you in and out. There will be no lazy, Sunday brunching today.
The menu is medium-sized and the portion sizes are more than the recommended serving size. However, the images and the actual taste of the meals is not equivalent. We ordered the French Toast Special—caramelized apples, walnuts and fresh banana, with cinnamon and sugar on top. Unfortunately, the caramelized apples were more of a gooey, sticky substance that tasted like canned pears. The French toast is however, just the right amount of moist, and was cooked well. We also had the Strawberry Shortcake French Toast that is crispy, but nothing to write home about and the blueberry pancakes do have fresh berries, but are incredibly dry. We should mention that although we don’t recommend brunch here, the prices are reasonable, and the restaurant is easy to find.
