Ester, located in Dorchester's Lower Mills is one of the more unique restaurants we've reviewed (and that's saying a lot). What makes it stand out is the quality of its ingredients, which are almost entirely grown on the building's roof. Wait what? Yes, there is a 5,000 square foot vegetable garden on top of the restaurant where they grow ingredients for their menu! What they don't grow themselves they source from local farmers, so to say the food quality here is high is an understatement. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and since the restaurant is surprisingly slow for brunch there is plenty of space between tables to allow for comfortable conversation. We'd say the vibe is more of a come to catch up w friends or even with your family rather than a boozy brunch party scene. The menu is of medium size with an array of brunch staples like omelettes, French toast, and a Benedict as well as variety of brunch bevies 👌. They also have an entire kid's menu for those of you looking to brunch con kiddos. We started w the Bloody Maria and Cranberry Blush Mimosa to get us in our "Down to Brunch" mood. Both drinks are satisfying but it should be noted the bloody Maria is made with tequila instead of the usual vod. For our entrees we ordered the Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon and the huevos rancheros. Surprisingly the salmon on the Benny is more like dinner salmon than smoked salmon, and perhaps it is for this reason the dish needs some added salt. Despite being a bit bland, the salmon, hollandaise and egg yolk blend well together for a light tasting meal. The huevos rancheros are very good, fresh and well seasoned. The homefries that come with the entrees are diner-potato-like and definitely could use some time in the good ol fryer to crisp em up. The portion sizes are average, filling the plate with enough food to mend an empty stomach but not so much that you need to be rolled out of the restaurant after. The prices are also very reasonable with everything falling between $10- $15.
