Little Donkey
4.0

Ever since Little Donkey opened in Central Square its been crowded with people enjoying the unique dishes and hip atmosphere. Their sort of newly added (December 2016) brunch is no different. Upon entering you feel slightly cooler then when you walked in as the restaurant has a minimalist and urban feel—wearhouse-esque, in a good way. In contrast, the menu is anything but minimal; offering a variety of raw bar dishes including four varieties of local oysters displayed near the open kitchen on ice with labels so you can see what you’re ordering. Being easily swayed to order oysters anyways, we started with two different kinds described on the menu as “creamy” and “tangy”. Not being able to stop after just four oysters we also ordered oyster shooters! They are two shots of your choice of clear liquor and their house made bloody mary mix, along with an oyster of course! The brunch menu also has a large variety of dishes including bakery items, grains, and “eggs & sammies”. The breakfast torta is served with fried eggs, cheddar, chorizo, harissa and a touch of cilantro. The eggs are perfectly cooked, causing a mess but not one you want to avoid. The chorizo isn’t greasy and is super flavorful, complimented nicely by the slightly spicy and smoky harissa. The Toad in the hole is too interesting of a dish not to order, containing a slice of miso banana bread with an egg in the middle and a side of habanero sausage and creamed spinach. First off, the miso banana bread is buttery and full of umami flavor for a banana bread. This banana bread is so good on its own we could eat a whole loaf! If the banana bread doesn’t win you over the habanero sausage will as it isn’t necessarily spicy, but subtly sweet like a habanero without its seeds. Both dishes are healthy portions, leaving you sad that you’re full but happy you lived the experience. At $9 to $15 per dish the meal can bit a bit pricier than a typical brunch, however the quality of the ingredients at Little Donkey are top notch and you really are getting what you pay for. So if you haven’t been to Little Donkey yet, stop being an ass and make a reservation now! #brunchesofboston #brunchroyalty #DTB
