Lone Star Taco Bar is a small, hipster Mexican bar with locations in both Allston and Cambridge, serving modernized street food (this review is for the Allston location). The wood-paneled walls and tin-colored accents make the small space feel simple and modern. Their brunch is served til 4pm, which is a major plus for late-risers. The menu for brunch-specific food features only 5 dishes, but on the bright side, they allow you to add an egg to any of their regular menu items for just a dollar. To start, we recommend La Luna Rosa, a light and tangy brunch drink with mezcal, lemon and grapefruit flavors. This 16 oz. drink does not mess around. The huevos rancheros is one of the brunch entrees, and although this is a staple brunch item, here you can 100% taste authenticity and Mexican influence. It’s a messy mix of sunny eggs, refried beans, avocado, and a ton of shredded queso fresco. (See previous post). Everything is extremely fresh, and the ranchero sauce drizzled over the dish complements the southwestern flavors perfectly. We of course had to try some tacos too. The breakfast taco combines a scrambled egg, avocado cream, melted cheese and roasted salsa; it reminds us of a mini breakfast burrito. Most of their tacos are only $4 or $5 so the portions are small, which makes it tempting to order like 10. We also tried the grilled avocado & tofu taco, which comes dripping with salsa and corn relish. SO delicious. Everything tastes authentic, but at the same time Lone Star does a good job adding flair and uniqueness to each dish. Aside from the single tacos, entrée prices and portions are great too, with everything falling under $12. Even though this place screams tacos and tequila, definitely check them out for brunch too.
